Lottery companies profits soar as recession continues

Not every industry is going through tough times in todays difficult economic times. The gambling industry is experiencing boom times. Lottery companies in particular are expected to post huge growth as more and more people turn to gambling and buying lottery tickets as their last hope to get through the tough economic environment.

The Windsor Star mentions that “with jobs continuing to dwindle, experts say lotteries, sweepstakes and other games of chance will cross the threshold from casual entertainment to last resort”

Carnegie Mellon University published a study last year that found that people who feel economically needy will spend more money on a gamble to become rich, buying nearly twice as many lottery tickets as those who feel more affluent.

According to lotteryinsider.com, all around the globe lottery operators post year on year increases in profits and revenues:

  • In Italy The first two months of 2009 saw Overall Gambling Up by 9.5%
  • Czech Lottery Ups Sales By 5.3%
  • In Greece OPAP Cites 19.6% Hike in Net Profits.
  • In UK, camelot’s ticket sales soared be 11%

Note to self: I need to remember buy a lottery ticket [7, 16, 21, 34, 36, 41] :)
